Facebook will scan your face for security

Lost24

Facebook and Instagram plan to roll out new features to improve security and privacy, including identity verification via video in which users are asked to record their face from different angles. This solution is intended to reduce the risk of scams and frauds, such as impersonating famous people or using false data. Facebook, after the recent controversy related to storing passwords unencrypted, assures that the new data protection mechanisms will be fully safe - recordings are to be encrypted and deleted after the verification process.

The new facial recognition technology will be used to block the content of fake ads, which often use images of celebrities to increase credibility. In the future, when appropriate mechanisms detect an advertisement containing the image of a public figure, the system will automatically verify its authenticity and hide the content if it is false. This function is also intended to make it easier to regain access to your account if you forget your password or have your device stolen - just record a short video of your face.

Facebook has started testing the technology on a group of recognizable people, and the results are promising, so it plans to expand its availability within a few weeks. The new features are intended to reduce fraud and abuse, but privacy concerns remain among users. Facebook says videos will be stored securely and not shared, but no exact date has been given for full implementation.
