the bicycle season and the growing number of thefts

Lost24

With the arrival of spring, we can officially start the bicycle season.

However, the increasing number of bikes translates into the growing number of thefts. Officially, last year 20 thousand two-wheeled vehicles got lost and how many thefts were not reported?

This number can be four times higher.

According to police statistics, the bikes are mainly stolen from basements, staircases and balconies situated on lower floors. Most people who report the theft left their bikes completely unattended and without any security measures.

While purchasing the bicycle we have to make sure that a serial number of the bike's frame is appended to a warranty card. It is a good idea to take a photo of the bicycle.

Every year In spring, before the beginning of the bicycle season, in big  cities, police carry out the action of tagging the two-wheeled vehicles. Our bicycle receives the individual code, entered in the special register, and we receive the ID card of the bicycle. The tagging itself can frighten off the potential thief, and when it comes to the actual theft, it will definitely facilitate to identify the owner of the bicycle by the police.

When the theft of our two-wheeled vehicle takes place, we should not only report it to the police but also start looking on our own. Take a walk around the local street markets and second-hand shops, browse auction portals, post the notice on community portals. The good  example can be the action from 2012, when a few minutes after the theft of the bicycle the pictures of stolen equipment were posted. The photo of the owner and the bicycle went viral and less than two hours later the bicycle was found.

We should get the good chain lock or U lock, tag our bicycle and enjoy the ride ( and if the theft takes place remember to post a notice on the lost24.pl portal).
