what to do when our documents or personal details fall into the wrong hands

Lost24

Do you remember our entry about the theft of documents and a few pieces of advice, what to do in such a situation?

Today we wanted you to realize, what consequences we can suffer, when our documents or personal details fall into the wrong hands.

Identity theft consists in the unlawful possession by third parties of our personal details as name, surname, address, PESEL number or the number of a credit card.

Why would anybody need our personal data? It is obvious that everything revolves around money.

The perfect example can be a Silesian resident who got the request for payment to the amount of a few thousand zlotys for overdue invoices from one of cellular networks. The swindler impersonated his victim and on her behalf signed an agreement with the cellular network. But, while signing the agreement, he has given the fictional address for correspondence.

It is a deliberate action because the first call for payment is sent to the address for correspondence - THE VICTIM IS NOT AWARE THAT SOMEBODY SIGNED AN AGREEMENT IN THEIR BEHALF- only a pre-court call for payment is sent to the address of the registered residence and then we realize that we became a victim of the swindler.

What consequences can we still suffer?

- obtaining a credit under false pretences in our name in so-called payday loans

- renting the car or the hotel accommodation

- forging the payment card

We have to remember when such situation occurs, we need to report it to the police as soon as possible. Ignoring the incoming mails will make it possible to sign us for the national debt register and we will also be legally obligated to pay off overdue bills.
